Bustince Sola, Humberto

Humberto Bustince Sola was born in Ujué/Uxue (Navarre) in 1958. He has a Bachelor’s Degree in Physics from the University of Salamanca and PhD in Mathematics from the Public University of Navarre. He is Professor of Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence at the Public University of Navarre, honorary professor at the University of Nottingham and member of the Smart Cities, Navarra Biomed and IDISNA (Navarre Health Research Institute) research institutes. He is also founder and head of the Research Group on Artificial Intelligence and Approximate Reasoning at the Public University of Navarre. He is currently the scientific director of NAIR, the Artificial Intelligence Research Center of Navarre.

His scientific achievements include: definition of interval-valued fuzzy entropy and intuitionistic fuzzy entropy and their application to image processing; introduction of the concepts of overlap functions, grouping and restricted equivalence; definition of the concept of directional monotony and associated with it the pre-aggregation of data and its application to data mining; definition of the concept of admissible order between intervals.

He is author of more than 200 publications in specialist journals (index h = 42 according to Scopus). His lines of research are focused on the modelling of uncertainty, especially through fuzzy sets and their extensions; the merging and aggregation of information; image processing, data mining, machine learning, deep learning and Big Data.

He has been deputy director of the Higher Technical School of Industrial Engineers and Telecommunications of the Public University of Navarre, being involved in the implementation of the Diploma in Computer Engineering and the Degree in Computer Engineering at this university, and also in the creation and development of the Degree in Data Science at the same university.

He is editor-in-chief of the EUSFLAT (European Society for Fuzzy Logic and Technology) magazine Mathware & Soft Computing, and editor-in-chief of the magazine Axioms. He is a member of the editorial committee of several JCR journals.

He received the award for the best work published in the IEEE Transactions on Fuzzy Systems magazine in 2013 and the research prize from the Public University of Navarre in 2015. He is a fellow of the International Fuzzy Systems Association (IFSA) and was awarded the Cruz de Carlos III el Noble, granted by the Government of Navarre, in 2017. He received the José García Santesmases National Computer Science Award granted by the Spanish Computer Science Society and the BBVA Foundation (2019) and a honorary membership of the Professional College of Computer Engineering of Navarra (2019).

He was elected Jakiunde academician on November 24, 2017.
