De Pablo, Luis

Luis de Pablo (1930, Bilbao-Madrid 2021) began studying piano at the age of 7, and started to compose at the age of 12. He furthered his training with Max Deutsch (Paris) and in Darmstadt (Germany).

He composed over 150 works for orchestra, chamber, soloist, concertante, vocal and electronic music, and 5 operas performed by various artists: the Arditti quartet, Pierre Boulez, Bruno Maderna, the O.N.E. Paris Orchestra, Tokyo Metropolitan, Claude Helffer, José Ramón Encinar, Rafael Frühbeck, Massimiliano Damerini, SWF Baden-Baden Orchestra, NDR Hamburg, Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra and the Arbós Trio.

Luis de Pablo was Professor of Composition in Buffalo, Ottawa, Montreal, Madrid, Milan and Strasbourg, and taught courses in many cities, including Paris, Madrid, Tokyo, Buenos Aires, Rome, Hiroshima and Los Angeles.

He was a fellow of the Academy of Fine Arts (Madrid and Granada); Academy of Santa Cecilia (Rome); Royal Belgian Academy; Official French Academy of Liberal Arts; European Society of Culture, and Regia Accademia Filarmonica di Bologna, and Jakiunde, Zientzia, Arte eta Letren Akademia, since its foundation.

Luis de Pablo received the King's Gold Medal, Spanish Red Cross Gold Medal,  Circle of Fine Arts Gold Medal (Madrid), Guerrero Foundation Award, CEOE (Confederation of Spanish Employers) Award for the Arts, cities of Rennes and Lille Medal (France), Honegger Award (Paris), Pierre de Monaco Award, and the Tomás Luis de Victoria Award. He was named a Distinguished Citizen of Bilbao by its city council, and Honorary Doctor by the Complutense University of Madrid (1996).

His music is published by TONOS (Darmstadt) Salabert (Paris) and Suvini Zerboni (Milan).
