Goñi Urcelay, Félix

Félix Goñi Urcelay (1951, Donostia-San Sebastián) is professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the University of the Basque Country, UPV/EHU, and head of the Biophysics Unit at the Combined CSIC-UPV/EHU Centre. His unit is one of the Basque Government and UPV/EHU's high performance groups. He has been appointed chair-elect of the Biophysical Society's Membrane Structure and Assembly Subgroup (MSAS) for 2014.

He holds a doctorate in Medicine and Surgery from the University of Navarre and pursued his postdoctoral studies at the University of London (Royal Free Hospital).

His research work focuses on the molecular interactions in cell membranes. He has published 6 books, 265 articles and given numerous guest and plenary lectures at international conferences and universities throughout the world. He is co-author of 2 patents and has supervised 15 doctoral theses, sits on the editorial boards of several specialist international journals and has sat on the scientific committees of numerous international conferences.

Professor Goñi is chairman of the Federation of European Biochemical Societies Publications Committee; founder and Chairman of the Biscay Biophysical Foundation; a Permanent Friend of the Royal Basque Society of Friends of the Country, and honorary professor at the National University of Córdoba, Argentina.

He has been the head of Science Policy for the Basque Government; consultant expert on the Ministry of Education and Science's Basic Biology Programme Committee (2002), and chaired the Programming Committee for the 51st Annual Meeting of the Biophysical Society (2006), Baltimore, Maryland, USA.

Félix Goñi Urcelay received the 2002 Euskadi Research Award.
