Stem Cells, Regeneration and the Quest for Immortality

Our bodies are composed of more than 200 cell types that add up for a total of 30 trillion cells, which are organized in complex organs with determined functions. A good portion of these cells need to be constantly renewed, which is one of the essential functions of stem cells. Even more, some animals can regenerate limbs or even the heart. However, as we grow older the regenerative process is hampered by several reasons.

The loss of this regenerative ability is one of the main reasons for aging. What would happen if we could maintain an infinite renewing capacity? Is biological immortality a possibility?
