Goiriena De Gandarias Y Gandarias, Juan José

Juan José Goiriena de Gandarias y Gandarias (Gernika, 1948 - Bilbao 2020) was professor of Physiology at the University of the Basque Country, UPV/EHU. He obtained his degree in Medicine and Surgery at the University of Salamanca, and lectured and conducted research at the universities of Oviedo, Murcia and the Basque Country (UPV/EHU).

His lines of research focused on applying the physiology of strain to sports medicine and the metabolism of adipose tissue.

He was Head of the Basurto Medical Institute Specialising in Sports Medicine and was a member of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts, and the Royal Academy of Medicine.

Dr. Goiriena supervised 20 doctoral theses, 5 of which received outstanding PhD thesis awards, authored over 80 research papers and articles, published in high impact journals such as the British Journal of Pharmacology; Enzyme; Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise; Journal of Applied Physiology; etc. He also coauthored several books. His latest research projects included those relating to the physiology of cycling, which were published in the most widely-read sports journals (Sport Sciences).

Dr. Goiriena was the Basque Government's deputy minister of Health and Consumption (1984 and 1987), vice-chancellor of the University of the Basque Country (1991-1996) and chairman of the Society of Basque Studies, Eusko Ikaskuntza, (1996 and 2001).

Among other awards, Juan José Goiriena de Gandarias y Gandarias received an Outstanding PhD Dissertation Award for his Thesis in 1973, and the UPV/EHU Gold Medal.

Dr. Goiriena was a member of Jakiunde since the creation of the Academy in 2007.
