Igor Ijurra Fernández (Etxarri Aranatz, Navarra, 1973) graduated in Choir Direction from MUSIKENE, the Higher School of Music of the Basque Country, and holds a degree in Singing and Music Theory from the Pablo Sarasate Advanced Conservatory of Music in Pamplona. He also holds a degree in Law from the University of Navarre.

As principal conductor of Orfeón Pamplonés since 2005, he has taken the group to a privileged place in the international scene, this being the first Spanish choir to perform in the Carnegie Hall in New York (2010) and in the Proms in London (2015), performing with some of the best international orchestras (New York Philharmonic, London Philharmonic, BBC Philharmonic, Mariinsky Orchestra, amongst others) led by renowned conductors including Juanjo Mena, Valery Gergiev, Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos, Vladimir Jurowski, Esa-Pekka Salonen, Gianandrea Noseda and Yuri Temirkanov.

His musical direction has particular prominence in the production of Carmina Burana performed with the theatre group La Fura dels Baus. He receives regular invitations from ensembles such as the RTVE Choir, the Spanish National Choir, the Navarre Symphony Orchestra and the Malaga Philharmonic.

He gives courses in conducting, music workshops and talks, and is asked to judge choir contests. He regularly premieres works by Basque and Navarran composers and promotes the life’s work of composer Lorenzo Ondarra.

In 2014 he was awarded the Diapasón de Oro (Golden Tuning Fork) from the Spanish Confederation of Choir Associations (Spanish acronym COACE) for his contribution to choral music.

Igor Ijurra is a corresponding member of JAKIUNDE since 8 November 2019. Previously, he was a young corresponding member (2016-2019).
