Larrañaga Múgica, Pedro

Pedro Larrañaga (Soraluze, Gipuzkoa, 1958) is Professor of Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence at the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid where he co-directs the Computational Intelligence Group. He has a degree in Mathematics (Statistics) from the University of Valladolid and a doctorate in Computer Science from the University of the Basque Country (extraordinary prize). His areas of interest are probabilistic graphical models, optimization heuristics, and machine learning models, with real-world applications in bioinformatics, neuroscience, and industry 4.0 domains. He has published more than 200 papers in impact factor journals and has supervised more than 30 doctoral theses.

He has directed the National Computer Science Technology Plan in the period 2007-2010, and belonged to the CNEAI during 2009-2010. He has participated in the elaboration of the Spanish Strategy in Artificial Intelligence in 2019 for the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities. He has been an elected member of the European Association for Artificial Intelligence since 2012 and of the Academia Europaea and the Asia-Pacific Artificial Intelligence Association since 2018 and 2021 respectively. His research work has been recognized with the Aritmel National Award in Computer Science in 2013, with the Spanish Association Award for Artificial Intelligence in 2018, and with the Amity Research Award in Machine Learning in New Delhi, in 2020. He leads the ELLIS Madrid Unit made up of outstanding researchers in the area of machine learning belonging to the six Madrid public universities.
