David Mecerreyes Molero has a degree in Chemistry from the University of the Basque Country (1994) and a PhD in Science from the University of Liège (Belgium, 1998). He conducted post-doctoral research at IBM Almaden and Stanford University (2000) and subsequently joined CIDETEC on a Ramón y Cajal grant. In 2011 he joined POLYMAT institute (University of the Basque Country) as Ikerbasque Research Professor. He currently manages the Innovative Polymers Group and is Deputy Scientific Director of POLYMAT.
Professor Mecerreyes research looks at the synthesis and application of ionic liquids in polymers, polymers for batteries and polymers for bioelectronics. His research career spans more than 20 years, during which he has published more than 300 scientific articles. He is a proponent of collaboration in the field of polymeric materials and is involved in a network of more than 20 national and international institutions.
The Innovative Polymers Group which he manages (http://www.polymat.eu/en/groups/innovative-polymersgroup) comprises 4 lead researchers, 12 post-doctoral researchers, 15 PhD students and 3 master's students. The group publishes more than 35 articles annually in leading polymer chemistry journals (ACS Macroletters, Macromolecules, Polymer, and Polymer Chemistry) and more general chemistry and materials publications (Journal of American Chemical Society, Journal of Materials Chemistry, ChemSusChem, Green Chemistry, Advanced Materials, and Nature Communications). Over the last 8 years, the group has obtained more than 7 million euros in European funding. It has generated 5 patents over recent years, one of which resulted in a spin-off company in 2020.
