Santesteban Insausti, Mikel

Mikel Santesteban Insausti (Barañain, 1977). Ramón y Cajal researcher at the University of the Basque Country and member of the The Bilingual Mind research team.

Mikel Santesteban received a PhD in Cognitive Science and Language from the University of Barcelona (July 2006) after defending the thesis titled Lexical representation and selection in bilingual speech production (led by: Albert Costa). The work involved the analysis of the cognitive mechanisms which occur in bilingual speakers during the language selection, and the results have been published in several international journals.

He worked as a researcher at the University of Edinburgh from 2007 to 2010, after which he relocated to the University of the Basque Country where he currently still works. Since 2014 he has also been a researcher on the Ramón y Cajal programme. His field of work is psycholinguistics and his main research area focuses on bilingualism and the cognitive mechanisms which take part in the production and understanding of language.

He has led research projects funded by the European Union and by Spanish institutions and has been involved in many others.

The results of his work have been published in international journals such as: the Journal of Memory and Language; Language, Cognition and Neuroscience; Bilingualism: Language and Cognition; and Brain and Language. He also works as a reviewer for various international publications and assessment agencies.

Mikel Santesteban was a young corresponding member of JAKIUNDE from November 2016 to december 2022.
